Palau is only 40 km away from Olbia.
To reach Palau from the port and from Costa Smeralda Airport in Olbia you only need 45 minutes on SS125. Alghero and Porto Torres are 140 km faraway and 120 km, less than 3 hours of travel along the suggestive "Riviera del Corallo" and the wonderful "Costa Paradiso".

Palau is a Sardinian ancient village which once was a shelter from the wind for fishermen. Today it is a fascinating centre of animated narrow streets full of life, where there are picturesque palaces inspired by the typical architecture of "stazzo", the old rural Gallurese home. The territory of Palau stretches along a tract of coastline of incomparable beauty throughout the Mediterranean, including Porto Pollo, Capo d'Orso and Cannigione with the wonderful archipelago of La Maddalena in the background.

Beaches of Palau. The beaches are numerous and beautiful both west and east. Without considering the islands of the archipelago, we recommend:

   • Sciumara, the beautiful beach of Palau, which can be reached on foot or by bike, usually very busy and enclosed by granitic rocks;
   • going to the left you meet Punta Sardegna with the wonderful Cala Trana, then Porto Pollo where Isola dei Gabbiani is an international place known by all lovers of waves and wind;
   • on the opposite side, overhead of Capo d'Orso, there is the Golfo delle Saline with its beautiful Punta Bianca, Vena Longa, and Saline.

Things to do in Palau and surroundings

It is very enjoyable to walk into the historic centre of Palau. It is funny to visit handicraft shops and taste local products in one of well-known restaurants. A visit to Capo d'Orso is necessary. In this area, there are the symbol of the town, a rock shaped of a bear, a lighthouse, and a fort. Palau and its beaches are perfectly equipped for all watersports enthusiasts: diving, windsurfing, sailing and much more.

Surroundings of Palau. The tourist port is perfectly serviceable. From its docks, you can reach quickly, by its own yacht or ferry boats, La Corsica, the famous seven islands of La Maddalena and all other islets and coves along almost 200km of coastline. The exclusive Emerald Coast and Porto Cervo are approximately 30 minutes away by car. A great alternative to the pleasure of the sea, during rare days of bad weather or in colder months, is represented by the significant archaeological heritage of the area. Around Palau you can visit some well-preserved giant tombs, some nuraghi and immerse yourself in a beautiful naturalistic scenery.
